(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
IRBIL, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- A team of archeologists managed to excavate an ancient city dating back to the Hellenistic Age in Dohuk governorate, Kurdistan Region, northwest Iraq.
The city, dating from 300 BC, includes a 40-tomb cemetery with clay coffins, Dohuk Antiquities and Heritage Directorate said in a press release on Friday.
It has been discovered as part of the excavations that were ramped up in the area after the waters of Al-Mosul Dam Lake receded this year, according to the statement.
Head of the Directorate Bekas Brefkany said the archaeological city is located near Khanke town in Semel district.
The city, which was lively for 5,000 years, includes relicts from the Bronze, Mitanni, Ashouri, Hellenistic and Islamic ages, he pointed.
The unearthed relics will be sent to Duhok museum for conservation and study, Brefkany added. (end)
