Dr. Kenny Chiwarawara is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at the University of Johannesburg. He holds a Ph.D in Development Studies from the University of the Western Cape. He has served at various institutions as, among others, a researcher and lecturer. He was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the School of Public Management and Administration, University of Pretoria before joining the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) in Social Change at Centre for Social Change, University of Johannesburg. His fields of specialisation include Social Movements, Protest, Service delivery and Migration. In 2011, he received the Institutional Operating Plan Award at the University of the Western Cape. The following year, he worked as a junior researcher under a Water Research Commission (WRC) project titled“Social Protests and Water Services Delivery in South Africa.” One of his recent articles titled“'Violent protests' in South Africa: understanding service delivery protests” featured in the Routledge, Taylor and Francis' article and book chapter collection which explore key areas of relevance in African Studies. The paper fell under the 'Elections, Protests and Social Movements' in Africa and was free to access in late 2024 and early 2025. He is a member of the South African Development Studies Association and the Development Studies Association (United Kingdom) who routinely reviews for several reputable national and international journals.
