Putin, Iranian Leader Hold Phone Call on Critical Issues
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian engaged in a critical phone conversation Monday to address recent regional developments, outcomes from the Russia-US summit in Alaska, and their collaboration on nuclear energy, according to a Kremlin statement.
“Vladimir Putin reported on the main results of the Russian-American summit held in Anchorage. Masoud Pezeshkian expressed support for the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” the Kremlin’s press service confirmed.
This exchange followed days after Putin’s high-profile meeting with US President Donald Trump at a military base in Anchorage, where both leaders expressed willingness to pursue avenues toward ending the war in Ukraine.
During the call, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s stance on its nuclear program, stating, “Tehran will not seek to create nuclear weapons,” while expressing gratitude for Russia’s position on the matter.
The two officials also focused on strengthening bilateral ties, especially regarding energy cooperation. Pezeshkian’s office highlighted discussions on the ongoing Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant construction and Russia’s recent fuel replacement in its operational reactor.
Looking ahead, Putin and Pezeshkian committed to meeting in person at the forthcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, underscoring their intent to broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.
They also exchanged views on escalating tensions in the South Caucasus, though no further specifics were disclosed.
The Kremlin noted the leaders stressed the necessity of sustained coordination on regional and global challenges.
On August 15, Putin and Trump’s landmark Alaska summit resulted in a shared commitment to “results” and opened the door to frameworks potentially ending the Ukraine conflict. Following this, Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington and held a brief, “constructive” phone call with Putin during the ongoing discussions.
