Egypt Backs UN Plan For Libyan Elections Within 12-18 Months
In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry stressed the importance of adhering to this timeframe to ensure the credibility of the political process and meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and development.
The ministry said the goal should be simultaneous presidential and legislative elections and the unification of Libyan institutions through a new, unified government. Egypt renewed its full support for UN efforts to restore security and stability in Libya and to preserve its unity and sovereignty.
The roadmap was unveiled before the UN Security Council on Thursday by Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, the UN special representative for Libya.
“We are convinced that the political process should focus on guaranteeing general elections and the unification of institutions through a sequenced approach,” Tetteh said.
She proposed a plan built on three pillars: implementing a viable electoral framework, unifying institutions through a new government, and a structured dialogue to enable broad Libyan participation.
“I will not set artificial timelines but believe that an overall timeframe of 12-18 months will be required for the successful completion of the roadmap, which will end in general elections,” she added.
Tetteh said the path would be“filled with challenges” and that she would need the“unequivocal support” of the Security Council and other key actors to“contain spoilers and protect the process.”
Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah welcomed Tetteh's briefing on the same day, stressing that addressing electoral laws, which he said have been the main obstacle to elections since 2021, is a key priority.
