(MENAFN) The Dutch legislative body was unable to reach a consensus on implementing actions against Israel after the resignation of Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp and other ministers from the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) party, as reported by a news agency on Saturday.

Members of Parliament rejected proposals that included penalizing Israel through measures such as banning the import of goods from the unlawfully occupied territories and halting arms purchases from Israel.

Although a substantial portion of the opposition supported imposing these actions, the initiatives did not secure a majority, largely due to the absence of the NSC ministers.

One of the unapproved motions also involved officially acknowledging the statehood of Palestine. However, lawmakers did collectively endorse a request urging the Israeli administration to permit access to both international and domestic media personnel, along with independent observers, into the Gaza region.

Conversely, the parliament did manage to find common ground on the issue of the "complete destruction" of Hamas, with broad agreement across party lines.

At the same time, acting Prime Minister Dick Schoof reiterated on the US-based social platform X that "everybody" recognizes the "steadily worsening situation" in Gaza as "dramatic."

He emphasized, “We all see the immense suffering and all of us would prefer that the humanitarian situation improve sooner rather than later."

Nonetheless, Schoof noted that this shared acknowledgment did not result in a united stance among the three main political factions.

"The departure of the NSC ministers makes further reflection on the resulting political situation necessary," he added.
