Brazilian lawmaker rejects blanket pardon for accused of attempted coup
(MENAFN) Hugo Motta, President of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, on Thursday rejected the notion that Congress would approve a sweeping pardon for individuals accused of participating in the attempted coup at the end of 2022 and early 2023.
“I do not see an environment in the Chamber for, for example, granting amnesty to those who planned to kill people. I do not believe that environment exists,” Motta told a news agency when asked about a potential amnesty bill.
The comments come in the wake of the Jan. 8, 2023, attack on government buildings in Brasilia by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Defense teams for Bolsonaro and other defendants presented their closing arguments on Wednesday, moving the legal proceedings closer to their final stages.
Motta noted that individuals with minor involvement in the events, who received particularly harsh sentences, might see their cases reviewed, potentially resulting in lighter penalties. “There is concern about people who did not play a central role, but who ended up receiving heavy sentences due to the accumulation of penalties. There is a certain sensitivity regarding these people who, in a review of sentences, could in some ways receive ... a lighter sentence,” he said.
