Trump’s government demands two universities to pay one billion dollars
(MENAFN) Federal authorities have demanded that the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) pay $1 billion to settle allegations of antisemitism, with the offer to lift a freeze on federal grant funding if the payment is made, according to officials.
UC President James B. Milliken, who oversees the 10-campus University of California system, confirmed Friday that the institution “just received a document from the Department of Justice and is reviewing it.” He warned, “As a public university, we are stewards of taxpayer resources and a payment of this scale would completely devastate our country's greatest public university system as well as inflict great harm on our students and all Californians.”
Milliken also emphasized the university’s role in driving technological innovation, boosting the U.S. economy, and supporting national security.
A draft settlement sent to UCLA reportedly outlines a payment plan in installments, along with the creation of a $172 million claims fund for individuals impacted by violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
