Germany Prepares Forming National Security Council
(MENAFN) Germany is reportedly preparing to set up the National Security Council later this month to tackle both domestic and international dangers, a news agency has stated.
According to the German Defense Ministry, the country has witnessed its most significant surge in military enlistment in recent years, a move intended to counter what Berlin defines as the “threat” posed by Russia.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged the transformation of the Bundeswehr into the “strongest conventional army in Europe” while advocating for a rise in defense expenditure to 3.5% of GDP by 2029.
In addition, Berlin is contemplating the revival of conscription in response to what it terms a “changing security situation in Europe.”
The planned security council will coordinate efforts among different governmental branches and concentrate on gathering and assessing intelligence related to domestic, foreign, economic, and cyber security matters.
Its functions will include convening during crises, pinpointing medium- and long-term risks, and crafting strategies to address them, the news agency reported.
Chaired by Merz, the council will comprise key ministers, officials from German security bodies, academic specialists, and envoys from other nations, as well as from the EU and NATO.
The formal announcement is scheduled for the first cabinet session following the parliamentary break on August 27 at the Ministry of Defense.
