Lebanese Gov't Endorses US Plan For State Monopoly On Arms

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, Aug 7 (KUNA) -- The Lebanese cabinet approved, during its meeting at Baabda Presidential Palace on Thursday, the plan proposed by US Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack to establish state monopoly on arms.
The session, chaired by President of the Republic Gen. Joseph Aoun, reaffirmed commitment to the provisions of the National Reconciliation Accord, known also as Taif Agreement of 1989, and the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The cabinet pledged to take the necessary steps for restoring the state sovereignty over all its territories, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.
The National Reconciliation Accord reasserts the exclusive right of the Lebanese government to decide on war or peace and established the state's monopoly on weapons, the statement reminded.
The government asserted the importance of adopting practical steps to ensure durable cessation of hostilities and end to all forms of non-government arms displays across the country particularly in the southern Litani River area, it added. (end)
