Nineteen people pass away due to motor truck overturning in Uganda

(MENAFN) Nineteen people lost their lives and thirteen others sustained injuries after a lorry overturned in Uganda’s western Hoima district, authorities reported on Wednesday.

According to police in the Albertine region, the incident occurred on Tuesday night as a fuel truck was transporting traders returning from a market in Buliisa district.

"The lorry failed to brake, lost control, fell and overturned, killing 19 people on the spot," a police spokesperson stated. Those injured were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Preliminary findings suggest the truck was overloaded, carrying both passengers and goods, which may have contributed to the accident.

Uganda has been experiencing a troubling rise in traffic fatalities. A recent police report revealed that 5,144 people died in road accidents in 2024, an increase from 4,806 in 2023 and 4,534 in 2022.
