Türkiye Overhauls Military Leadership at Key Meeting

(MENAFN) Türkiye has named Land Forces Commander Selcuk Bayraktaroglu as the new chief of general staff, following a high-level reshuffle at the annual Supreme Military Council meeting held Tuesday.

The session, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and attended by top military and civilian officials, centered on senior promotions and retirements within the armed forces.

President Erdogan approved a series of key appointments, including the retirement of Metin Gurak—the current chief of staff—who will step down at the end of August after serving in the role since 2023.

In a corresponding move, Metin Tokel, previously commanding the First Army, has been promoted to lead the Land Forces, according to an official announcement from the presidency.

Ercument Tatlioglu will continue as navy commander, while Ziya Cemal Kadioglu will retain his position as air forces commander for another year.

Erdogan underscored that the council met against a backdrop of regional unrest, marked by crises, tensions, and ongoing conflicts. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s steadfast commitment to establishing itself as a dominant force in the region.
