Turkmenistan Hosts UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries

(MENAFN) The third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC) has officially commenced in Turkmenistan’s Awaza National Tourist Zone. Running through August 8, this marks the first LLDC gathering since the 2014 conference in Vienna, Austria.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the event’s inauguration and confirmed that Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov will preside over the sessions.

President Berdimuhamedov outlined the conference’s goals and agenda, emphasizing Turkmenistan’s strategies, initiatives, and proposals aimed at fostering international collaboration.

The conference agenda features a diverse lineup of parliamentary, youth, civil society forums, and high-level roundtable talks, with numerous global leaders, policymakers, and experts expected to participate.

Representing Türkiye, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu will attend the summit.

The UN highlights that LLDCs struggle with challenges in trade, connectivity, and development due to their lack of seaport access. This dependence on transit countries leads to increased costs and prolonged delays in trade.

This pivotal third edition of the conference seeks to forge impactful partnerships designed to unleash the economic potential of landlocked developing countries.

Currently, the UN classifies 32 nations as landlocked developing countries, collectively home to roughly 600 million people.
