Death Toll Rises To 22 From Angola Protests

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, July 30 (KUNA) -- The death toll from the violence that sparked by the Angolan government's decision to raise fuel price has risen to 22, including a policeman, and 197 others wounded, said Interior Minister Manuel Homem on Wednesday.
Some 214 people have been arrested owning to violence, Homem was quoted by Angola's official news agency as saying.
About 66 stores belonging to different companies, banks and people, along vehicles, public institutions, have been damaged in sabotage acts, he stated.
Protests were staged in the wake of the government's decision to raise subsidized fuel price from euros 0.28 to 0.38 per liter.
The decision angered large segments of people across Angola, the second largest oil producer in Africa after Nigeria.
Thus, civil society associations called for protests against the move every Saturday over the last three weeks. (end)
