(MENAFN) Former US President Barack Obama has urged for prompt measures to avert widespread starvation in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Obama emphasized the need for a comprehensive resolution to the ongoing crisis, which should include the return of all hostages and an end to Israel’s military operations.

He stressed that these measures should not overshadow the immediate necessity of addressing the dire situation, where innocent lives are at risk due to preventable hunger.

"While a lasting resolution to the crisis in Gaza must involve a return of all hostages and a cessation of Israel’s military operations, these articles underscore the immediate need for action to be taken to prevent the travesty of innocent people dying of preventable starvation," Obama commented, sharing links to two New York Times articles.

Obama further stated, "Aid must be permitted to reach people in Gaza. There is no justification for keeping food and water away from civilian families."

His call comes amid growing concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In response, Israel declared plans on Sunday for temporary localized pauses in combat, aiming to facilitate the delivery of essential aid through designated safe corridors.

This decision follows the alarming reports of numerous Palestinian deaths from starvation within the besieged region.

The hunger crisis in Gaza has escalated into a catastrophic humanitarian disaster.

Heart-wrenching images and videos show emaciated residents, some barely recognizable due to their extreme malnutrition, succumbing to the effects of exhaustion, dehydration, and prolonged hunger.

For the past 18 years, Israel has enforced a blockade on Gaza, which has severely limited access to basic supplies.

Since March 2, Israel has closed all crossing points into Gaza, worsening the already dire conditions for the population in the enclave.

Despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli military has continued its offensive since October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of nearly 60,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children.
