Syria To Hold First Parliamentary Elections Under New Government In September

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Syria will hold its first parliamentary elections under its new government in September, selecting 210 lawmakers in a vote aimed at shaping future reforms.

Syria will hold its first parliamentary elections since the formation of a new transitional government this September, according to the state news agency SANA.

Election Commission chief Mohammad Taha announced on Sunday that voting will take place between September 15 and 20 to elect 210 members of parliament.

Taha confirmed that interim president Ahmed Shar'a has received the draft of a new electoral law, which raises the number of parliamentary seats from 150 to 210, with one‐third of those seats to be appointed directly by the president.

The government has pledged to guarantee representation for diverse social groups and allow foreign observers to monitor the elections closely, aiming to add credibility to the process.

Officials also stated that regions outside government control - including Kurdish‐held areas in the north and the Druze‐majority province of Sweida - will retain their share of seats based on population.

The new parliament is expected to pave the way for democratic and economic reforms, as well as ratify key foreign policy agreements in the coming years.

However, concerns remain. Critics say power stays concentrated with Islamist leaders, casting doubt on how genuine the promised reforms really are.
