EU Says Six Member Nations May Request Exemption from Migration Pact
(MENAFN) The European Commission has confirmed that six EU countries—Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Austria, and Poland—may request full or partial exemptions from the bloc’s upcoming Pact on Migration and Asylum, set to take effect in mid-2026.
"Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Croatia, Austria and Poland face a significant migratory situation because of the cumulative pressures of the last five years. They will have the possibility to request the Council to grant a full or partial deduction from their contributions to the Solidarity Pool for the upcoming year," the commission said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Solidarity Pool requires EU member states to support border management through relocation efforts, financial aid, alternative measures, or a mix of these strategies.
The Commission highlighted that Greece, the Greek Cypriot Administration, Spain, and Italy are “under migratory pressure due to the disproportionate level of arrival,” and noted that these nations will be able to access the fund.
"Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, France, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and Finland are at risk of migratory pressure, either because of high numbers of arrivals in the preceding year, ongoing strains on their reception systems or the threat of weaponisation of migration that could create disproportionate obligations in the upcoming year," the statement added.
Countries identified as at risk will receive priority support from the EU Migration Support Toolbox, offering both technical and financial assistance to help manage the pressure.
In a related move, the Commission announced a €250 million ($289 million) tender aimed at boosting drone and anti-drone capabilities for states confronting “hybrid threats and increasing drone incursions.”
