OIC Presses UN Security Council to End Gaza Genocide Now

(MENAFN) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), currently under Türkiye’s leadership, urged the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday to take swift action to halt the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

At the Security Council’s Open Debate on the Middle East, Türkiye’s UN Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz expressed deep disappointment over the failure of recent talks aimed at a permanent ceasefire. He highlighted that the Palestinian population, particularly in Gaza, continues to endure relentless suffering amid the illegal occupation.

Yildiz emphasized the escalating toll, warning that "more innocent lives are lost" daily as Gaza’s residents face dire and life-threatening conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the OIC, Yildiz denounced what he called “genocide, forced displacement, starvation and destruction perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip,” categorizing these acts as "war crimes and crimes against humanity."

He characterized the Israeli approach as a purposeful attempt to forcibly remove Gaza’s native Palestinian population, labeling it an unprovoked breach of fundamental human rights and all standards of international and humanitarian law.

Yildiz appealed to the Security Council to “assume its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security at this very crucial period in the history of the protracted Middle East crisis.”

Turning to Syria, he voiced the OIC’s strong condemnation of “the continued Israeli aggression against the sovereignty and territory of the Syrian Arab Republic,” reaffirming support for Syria’s “legitimate right to self-defense.”

Speaking in his national role, Yildiz stated that Türkiye, as co-chair of the roundtable on the two-state solution, "urges all member states to seize the opportunity to reinvigorate collective efforts toward a just, comprehensive and lasting peace," including full UN membership for Palestine.

He concluded with a call for unified and decisive action: "We call on this Council to act with unity, determination and moral clarity to end suffering in Gaza," describing this moment as "a historic opportunity" to advance the two-state solution and uphold international law.
