Türkiye Develops "Steel Dome" Air Defense System


(MENAFN) Türkiye has developed a sophisticated, multi-layered air defense system known as the "Steel Dome," entirely based on domestically produced platforms and an integrated design strategy.

This innovative system employs synchronized operations and artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in the decision-making processes, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of its defense capabilities.

Haluk Gorgun, the head of Türkiye’s Defense Industries Secretariat (SSB), explained that the "Steel Dome" was designed to detect and neutralize threats across a wide range of distances, from long-range to close-range threats.

It uses a layered defense approach while ensuring unified control throughout its operations. Gorgun made these remarks at an event hosted by the SAHA Istanbul defense cluster.

The system integrates several defense components, including Siper, Hisar A+ and O+, Korkut, and Sungur systems.

These elements operate under a singular command-and-control architecture, which incorporates radars, electro-optical sensors, signal jammers, and laser systems into a cohesive structure.

The command-and-control system of the "Steel Dome" is enhanced by artificial intelligence, which allows for the creation of optimal intervention scenarios and facilitates communication with relevant units.

Gorgun emphasized the importance of AI in speeding up decision-making processes and improving accuracy alongside human input.

Gorgun further stated that if Türkiye had opted to purchase the components that make up the "Steel Dome" rather than producing them locally, achieving such a level of interoperability would have been a significant engineering challenge.
