UN states only third of sustainable developments goals in motion
(MENAFN) On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres revealed that only 35% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are either on target or showing acceptable progress, while 18% are actually regressing.
Speaking during the release of the Sustainable Development Goals 2025 report, Guterres reflected on the decade that has passed since the launch of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He highlighted key areas of advancement since 2015, noting that millions of people now have access to electricity, clean cooking technologies, and internet services. He also mentioned that social protection programs have expanded significantly, now covering more than half the global population—a dramatic rise compared to a decade earlier.
Guterres pointed to continued improvements in education, with more children, particularly girls, attending school and a noticeable decline in child marriage rates.
He also praised the growth in renewable energy, largely led by developing nations, and added, "Women's representation is rising across governments, businesses and societies."
Despite these achievements, he emphasized that overall progress remains insufficient, stressing that efforts must accelerate to meet the goals by 2030.
