US House Minority Leader announces meeting with NYC mayoral nominee

(MENAFN) U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced on Monday that he plans to meet with New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani later this week.

"I'm scheduled to meet with the Democratic nominee at the end of the week back home in Brooklyn," Jeffries told reporters during a briefing on Capitol Hill.

Although Jeffries, a prominent Democrat from New York, confirmed the upcoming meeting, he has not yet offered an endorsement of Mamdani, who recently secured the Democratic nomination in the city’s mayoral primary.

Meanwhile, the race for City Hall remains highly competitive. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared on Monday that he will continue his bid for mayor as an independent candidate. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who left the Democratic Party, is also running for re-election as an independent.

Jeffries stated that he has not spoken with either Cuomo or Adams since the conclusion of the primary.
"I haven't had a conversation with either of them, and I have no current plans to do so at this moment," he said.
