Mexican President Hopes Resolving U.S. Tariff Threat

(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke out on Monday regarding the 30% tariff threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump, showing optimism that a resolution can be achieved before the new fee is implemented.

Over the weekend, the Trump administration sent notifications to international leaders about additional tariffs on their exports.

In Mexico’s case, the notification included a proposed 30% duty on its shipments, a step reportedly linked to what the U.S. perceives as Mexico’s insufficient efforts to curb drug trafficking across the shared border.

“We have a working group, and we hope to reach an agreement — that is our goal. There are also issues related to fentanyl and security on the table, and in that case, an agreement has already made some progress, always within the framework of respect for our sovereignty,” Sheinbaum explained.

Despite rising tensions, Sheinbaum remains confident that an accord will be finalized before August 1, the date the tariffs are scheduled to begin.

Over the weekend, Trump criticized Mexico for failing to adequately secure the border and block drug trafficking into the U.S., stating that the 30% tariff is a response to the unsatisfactory performance by the Sheinbaum administration.
