Zelenskyy Proposes Extension of Martial Law

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted draft legislation to the nation’s parliament on Monday, seeking to prolong both martial law and the general mobilization for an additional 90 days.

The two proposed bills appeared on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s legislative body, indicating that the extensions would remain in place until Nov. 5.

If these bills are enacted, the legislation concerning general mobilization will become effective starting Aug. 7, while the law extending martial law will take effect upon its official publication.

Zelenskyy initially imposed martial law and general mobilization on Feb. 24, 2022, coinciding with Russia’s launch of what it referred to as a “special military operation” within Ukraine.

Since then, these emergency measures have been renewed several times, with the latest renewals being approved and signed into law in April.
