US Senator states new sanctions provide Trump with power

(MENAFN) US Senator Lindsey Graham has stated that a new sanctions bill currently moving through the Senate would provide President Donald Trump with unprecedented power to strike at Russia’s economy and the countries that continue to support it. Graham described the bill as handing Trump a “sledgehammer” to use if diplomacy fails.

Trump has previously expressed willingness to impose more sanctions should peace talks between Moscow and Kiev fall apart, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately delaying negotiations.

Speaking in an interview broadcast on Sunday, Graham, who co-sponsored the legislation with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, said that while Trump has been tough on other countries, he has so far “left the door open regarding Russia.” He added, “That door is about to close.”

“Dick and I have got 85 co-sponsors in the United States Senate for congressional sanctions with a sledgehammer available to President Trump to go after Putin’s economy, and all those countries who prop up the Putin war machine,” Graham said.

The proposed law would allow Trump to impose tariffs as high as 500% on countries that continue economic ties with Russia. Graham specifically pointed to China, India, and Brazil as possible targets. He noted that the legislation would give the president “maximum flexibility” in implementing the sanctions.

Graham also said the US is preparing to drastically increase military support for Ukraine, claiming that weapons shipments will be expanded “at a record level.” He added that there is a push to use frozen Russian assets to help finance Ukraine’s defense.

“I expect, in the coming days, that there will be tariffs and sanctions available to President Trump he has never had before,” he said.
