
NIT Srinagar Secures Indian Patent For Innovative Fabric Wear Measurement System
It was officially granted on July 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the institute's pursuit of cutting-edge research and technological innovation.
The patented system is the outcome of collaborative research between the Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments. The team of inventors includes Prof. M. F. Wani, Head Mechanical Engineering Department (MED); Prof. Rakesh Sehgal (Former NIT Srinagar Director); Dr. Sheikh Shahid Saleem from MED; and Dr. Vivek from the Department of Civil Engineering.
Designed to enhance precision and efficiency in measuring fabric wear, the innovative test rig holds significant potential for applications in textile research laboratories and commercial manufacturing, particularly in quality control and product development processes.
In a joint statement, team members said that“We believe that such innovations underscore the growing technological contributions of NIT Srinagar to the national and international research community. The development of this novel system holds immense potential for the fabric and textile testing industry, enhancing both precision and efficiency in wear measurement analysis,” they said.

“This achievement reflects the high-quality research being undertaken at NIT Srinagar. The development of a dedicated wear measurement system for the textile industry is a fine example of how academic innovation can solve real-world industrial challenges,” he said.
Prof. Kanaujia added that the innovation not only enhances the institute's academic standing but also opens up new avenues for national and international research collaborations and industrial partnerships.
“We believe this system has the potential for commercialization and industry impact,” he said.
Institute's Registrar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, also lauded the efforts of the faculty members and stated that securing this patent is a testament to the talent, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our academic community.
