OAPEC Chief: Security, Major Obstacle Facing Global Energy Mix

VIENNA, July 10 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) Jamal Al-Loughani said Thursday that energy security is one of the major challenges facing global energy mix, in light of accelerating changes in this sector.
Interviewed by KUNA on the sidelines of the Ninth OPEC International Seminar in Vienna, Al-Loughani said achieving energy security requires mixing all reliable sources, topped with oil and gas, along boosting the use of renewable energy and improving energy consumption efficiency.
He underlined the need of diversifying energy sources and addressing challenges of limited production of critical minerals.
On OAPEC future, Al-Loughani noted that it plans to expand organizing research events and providing data related to energy sources, environment and sustainability to enhance transparency and market stability.
The bloc contributes to building a reliable, clean and fair energy system for the upcoming generations, he said.
He pointed to the raid change in energy industry and the appearance of renewable energy.
Keeping pace with energy changes, achieving energy security and reducing emissions are challenges facing OAPEC, he elaborated.
He called for adopting a balanced approach based on eliminating carbon and keeping fossil fuel as part of a sustainable and varied energy mix.
OAPEC chief urged enhancing international collaboration and sharing technology as well as funding projects to help developing countries for just and real transition to clean energy.
The bloc is carrying out 15 strategic initiatives to fulfill the administrative and legal amendments of the establishment agreement to turn the bloc into an inclusive Arab organization by December, he said.
OAPEC Arab members own 54 percent of global oil reserve, and 27 percent of gas, and this helps them play a pivotal role in meeting the global demand for energy, he added. (Pickup previous)
