Trump Confirms Deadline for New Tariffs
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the tariffs outlined in official letters will come into effect starting August 1, and this timeline will remain firm without any delays.
Posting on social media, Trump stated: “As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025.”
He emphasized that the deadline is final, continuing, “There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 - No extensions will be granted.”
A day earlier, Trump had shared documents online listing the newly proposed tariff rates for 14 nations.
The countries named included Tunisia, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Japan, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Serbia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos.
According to a news agency, the new rates span from 25 percent to 40 percent.
The tariff letters were addressed to the leaders of the mentioned countries and included a pointed message: “Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal.”
Trump used the opportunity to encourage these nations to manufacture their goods in the United States as a way to avoid these new duties.
He also remarked that the proposed tariffs are "far less than" what would be necessary to completely resolve the trade disparities between those countries and the US.
Additionally, Trump issued a warning: if any of the targeted nations retaliate with tariffs against the US, the rates could be increased beyond the levels already proposed.
