Trump Threatens Extra Tariffs Amid BRICS Summit
KABUL (Pajhwok): Amid a summit of BRICS leaders in Brazil, President Donald Trump has announced the United States will impose a 10% tariff on countries aligning with what he called“Anti-American policies.”
In opening remarks at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva likened the group to the Cold War-era Non-Aligned Movement, a coalition of developing nations that sought to remain independent from both Western and Soviet blocs, Reuters reported.
“BRICS is the heir to the Non-Aligned Movement,” Lula told fellow leaders.“With multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is in check once again.”
In a joint statement released Sunday afternoon, BRICS warned that the growing use of tariffs poses a threat to global trade-a continuation of the group's veiled criticism of Trump's trade policies.
“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He did not clarify what specific policies he was referring to.
The Trump administration is currently working to finalize a series of trade agreements with various countries ahead of a July 9 deadline, when a new round of retaliatory tariffs is set to take effect.
BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, later expanded to include South Africa. Last year, the group added Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This year marks the first summit to include Indonesia as a full participant.
