India Aims Shifting from Energy Importer to Exporter
(MENAFN) India is anticipated to transform into a net energy exporter within the upcoming six to seven years, according to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Currently, the South Asian country relies significantly on overseas sources for its energy requirements.
As reported by an Indian business-focused daily newspaper, during the 2024-25 fiscal year, India brought in 88 percent of its crude oil and fulfilled 51 percent of its gas demand through imports.
“Today we are the importer of energy but within six to seven years, we will be [an] exporter,” Gadkari declared at a recent gathering organized by an Indian media platform.
Ranked as the world’s third-largest economy, India remains largely reliant on fossil fuels, which are responsible for around 75 percent of the country's total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
Gadkari, a firm advocate for hydrogen as the energy source of tomorrow, highlighted the government’s ongoing support for generating eco-friendly fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel.
According to him, shifting toward renewable energy resources will not only cut pollution levels but also reduce transportation and logistics expenses.
