Türkiye, Syria Reach New Transport Agreement

(MENAFN) Türkiye and Syria have inked a fresh memorandum of understanding focused on international road transportation, setting the stage for the revival of direct overland routes between the two neighboring nations.

This development was announced on Saturday by Türkiye’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu.

In an interview with a news agency during the Global Transport Connectivity Forum held in Istanbul, Uraloglu noted that this latest pact revitalizes the International Road Transport Agreement originally signed by the two sides in 2004.

Under this renewed agreement, freight trucks will be permitted to traverse the border directly without the necessity of transferring their cargo to different vehicles.

This alteration is expected to streamline commerce by making it more efficient, less complicated, and more economical.

“Cargo transfer at border crossings will end, allowing goods to be transported directly between Türkiye and Syria without the need for transshipment,” he stated.

Additionally, Uraloglu emphasized that both nations have agreed to commence transit transport operations, which would facilitate uninterrupted land access from Türkiye to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and several other Gulf states.

The agreement also involves collaboration between Turkish and Syrian authorities in multiple aspects of passenger and cargo transport.

This includes the organization of shared training sessions to enhance operational capabilities.

Reinstating transport connectivity between Türkiye and Syria is expected to not only elevate both countries’ standing in regional commerce across Europe and Asia but also support the integration of the Middle Corridor with Gulf economies, Uraloglu concluded.
