UN Report: 80% Of Young Women In Afghanistan Denied Education And Work Opportunities
A recent report by UN Women reveals that 80% of young women in Afghanistan are currently denied access to education and employment. The report, released on Friday, June 27, highlights the severe impact of Taliban policies on the basic rights of Afghan women and girls.
As reported by UN Women, Afghanistan ranks among the worst countries globally in terms of gender equality and women's empowerment, describing the situation as“catastrophically behind” compared to global standards. The report cites the widespread rollback of women's rights under the Taliban regime.
Since their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban have issued over 80 decrees that directly target and limit women's fundamental freedoms, according to the UN. These orders have systematically dismantled women's access to public life, education, and employment.
Despite these restrictions, UN Women says it continues to invest in programs that support leadership, resilience, and empowerment among Afghanistan's girls and women, even under the current repressive conditions.
The agency affirms that women and girls in Afghanistan remain determined and continue to resist the Taliban's harsh gender policies, often at great personal risk.
Human rights organizations and international stakeholders have repeatedly condemned the interm administration's actions and called for urgent international intervention and pressure. The continued exclusion of women from society has sparked global concern and demands for accountability.
Unless meaningful steps are taken, Afghanistan risks further isolation and long-term developmental setbacks. Ensuring women's rights is not only a human rights issue but also essential for the country's stability and progress.
