N-Korea reassures ‘unconditional’ backing for Russia
(MENAFN) North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reiterated his country’s full and unconditional support for Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu in Pyongyang on Wednesday. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the two officials discussed ways to strengthen their strategic alliance and honored the contributions of North Korean troops involved in the fighting.
This meeting is Shoigu’s second visit to North Korea within a few months. During their March meeting, both sides pledged to deepen their cooperation and coordinate on major international geopolitical matters.
Kim affirmed that North Korea stands firmly behind Russia’s foreign policies on key global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. He also reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in June 2024, which includes clauses for mutual military support in case of armed conflict.
Earlier this year, both countries confirmed the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia’s Kursk Region to help repel Ukrainian forces. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised North Korean soldiers for their bravery and discipline on the battlefield.
Since December 2024, the partnership agreement has boosted military collaboration between Moscow and Pyongyang. Kim highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship and expressed confidence in Russia’s eventual success in defending its sovereignty and security interests.
