FSB declares Ukrainian agent arrested in Crimea

(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Tuesday that it detained a Crimean resident accused of working with Ukrainian special services to assemble an improvised explosive device (IED) intended for a terrorist attack on the peninsula.

The 59-year-old man from Feodosia reportedly contacted Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) voluntarily and was recruited by a Ukrainian intelligence officer. The FSB said he maintained secret communication with his handler and, following remote instructions, retrieved explosive materials from hidden caches and assembled the bomb in his garage.

The device contained over 1.2 kilograms of high explosives, an electric detonator, a homemade remote receiver and transmitter, and nearly 500 grams of nails designed to act as shrapnel. The bomb was then concealed in Sevastopol’s Balaklava district, with its coordinates sent to his Ukrainian contact.

The FSB released video footage showing the suspect’s arrest and confession, in which he admitted reaching out to Ukrainian intelligence after the 2022 escalation and assembling the device based on detailed guidance. The video also displayed the explosive device and messages exchanged with the Ukrainian handler.

The FSB said this case is part of a wider pattern of sabotage linked to Ukrainian intelligence activities. The suspect faces charges of high treason and illegal handling of explosives and has been placed in pre-trial detention.

This announcement follows recent sabotage attacks on Russian railway infrastructure in Bryansk and Kursk regions, where two bridges collapsed under moving trains, resulting in seven deaths and over 100 injuries. Russia’s Investigative Committee is treating those incidents as terrorist attacks ordered by Ukrainian authorities and suspects the use of US-made C-4 explosives.
