Apple Seeks South Korea’s Approval to Export Detailed Map Data

(MENAFN) Apple, the American smartphone giant, has formally requested South Korea’s government permission to export highly detailed map data beyond its borders, mirroring a recent application from Google, a local news reports.

This marks Apple’s second attempt. On Monday, it submitted a formal application to the National Geographic Information Institute, a government agency, “seeking approval to export detailed 1:5,000-scale map data for use in its map services.”

Unlike Google, which operates without local map servers in South Korea, Apple maintains a domestic infrastructure to store such precise geospatial information.

Earlier, in February 2023, Apple’s initial application was rejected, “due to national security concerns.”

Google followed up with its own request in February of this year.

This push to move detailed map data abroad arrives amid ongoing tariff discussions between the United States and South Korea, adding complexity to the tech and trade landscape.
