Brutal ambush in Sudan kills five UN aid workers

(MENAFN) A brutal ambush in Sudan late Monday left at least five United Nations aid workers dead and several others wounded after armed militants opened fire on a humanitarian convoy, according to official statements.

The convoy, jointly managed by UNICEF and the World Food Program (WFP), was delivering essential relief to the conflict-ridden region of North Darfur. The 15-truck convoy had paused roughly 80 kilometers from Al Fashir while awaiting clearance when it came under attack.

“The convoy, made up of 15 trucks, was attempting to reach children and families in famine-affected Al Fashir with life-saving food and nutrition supplies,” they reported.

As per the joint statement, multiple trucks were torched, and critical aid cargo was either destroyed or severely damaged. The five individuals killed in the assault were Sudanese nationals working as contractors for the UN agencies.

“The United Nations condemns this horrendous attack in the strongest possible terms,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.
