Iran pledges ‘severe punishment’ for Israeli assault
(MENAFN) Iran has pledged a decisive response following Israeli airstrikes that killed several senior Iranian commanders and nuclear experts, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on Friday.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced it had struck numerous targets across Iran, including military sites and a nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained the attacks were meant to undermine Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons.
Khamenei condemned the strikes, warning Israel to “expect severe punishment” and stating that the attacks had hit residential areas in addition to military sites. The Iranian General Staff called the assault a “blatant aggression” and promised a “crushing” retaliation.
Media reports identified Iran’s losses as including Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Gholam Ali Rashid, deputy chief of army staff, and nuclear scientists Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoon Abbasi.
The attack came just days before a sixth round of US–Iran nuclear talks in Oman. President Donald Trump recently accused Iran of stalling negotiations, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted Washington was not involved in the strikes.
Iran maintains it is not developing nuclear weapons and says its nuclear program is meant for civilian use.
