Serbia replies to allegations of ‘betraying’ Russia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has dismissed accusations that his recent trip to Ukraine betrayed Serbia’s traditionally friendly relations with Russia. Attending the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit in Odessa, Vucic met with Ukrainian President Zelensky, marking his first visit to Ukraine in 12 years in office.

When questioned about the alleged betrayal, Vucic challenged the claim, emphasizing that he refused to sign the summit’s final declaration condemning Russia and supporting Ukraine’s NATO ambitions. He highlighted his consistent stance of maintaining good relations with both countries, affirming Serbia’s commitment to an independent foreign policy.

Serbia remains one of the few European nations that has not imposed sanctions on Russia or openly sided with Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Vucic also rejected recent accusations by Russian intelligence that Serbian defense firms secretly supplied ammunition to Ukraine, promising to prevent any illegal arms transfers.
