Mexican President Demands Comprehensive U.S. Immigration Overhaul
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized Tuesday that immigration challenges cannot be resolved through raids or forceful actions. Instead, she called for a "comprehensive immigration reform" that acknowledges the significant role migrants play in the United States, particularly those who have resided there for many years.
During her routine morning press briefing, Sheinbaum expressed her strong opposition to the widespread detention and deportation of undocumented migrants in the U.S.
Highlighting the deep roots many Mexicans and other Latin Americans have in the country, she pointed out that a large portion of this population has lived in the United States for over a decade and is deeply woven into the fabric of American society. She further noted that the U.S. economy depends heavily on their labor contributions.
Following recent demonstrations in California protesting the immigration crackdown, Sheinbaum urged participants to keep their protests peaceful and reject any form of violence.
"The call is to avoid violent actions and to support each other as we always do," she said, stressing that protests should "always be peaceful."
She reaffirmed Mexico’s unwavering stance to protect its nationals living in the United States, reiterating the urgent need for a "comprehensive immigration reform" that recognizes the vital contributions of long-term migrants.
The protests, which erupted last weekend in downtown Los Angeles in response to immigration raids in California, saw hundreds of demonstrators confront U.S. National Guard troops.
