UNGA Elects Five New Non-Permanent Members Of UNSG Including Bahrain

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, June 3 (KUNA) -- The UN General Assembly on Tuesday elected five new non-permanent members of the Security Council namely Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Latvia and Columbia for the mandate between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027.
It is the first time that Latvia has been elected a member of the Security Council. Columbia had won the seat seven times, Congo twice, Bahrain and Liberia once.
The UNSG comprises 15 members including ten of non-permanent membership and are elected by the assembly that represents all the 193 member states at UN.
Five non-permanent members' mandate will expire by end 2025 -- they are Algeria, Guinea, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia.
Those whose terms conclude by the end of 2026 are Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.
The UNSG five permanent members are the UK, China, the US, France and Russia. (end)
