Jordanian UN ambassador gets selected as ICJ judge

(MENAFN) Jordan's UN ambassador Mahmoud Hmoud was selected as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Tuesday to come in the place of Nawaf Salam, who quitted in January after being hired as Lebanese prime minister.

Hmoud will work the rest of Salam's time at the ICJ, as it is over in 5th of February in 2027.
Since September 2021, Hmoud has been Jordan's UN ambassador, and he was Singapore’s Jordanian ambassador from 2018 and 2021.

Having been chairperson of the commission in its 72nd meeting in 2021 and chairman of the Drafting Committee in 2012, he was involved in the International Law Commission from 2007 to 2022.

The selection of ICJ judges is done via confidential voting at the Security Council and the General Assembly. A nominee has to get vast majority in two booths to get selected. Voting in them both has to happen simultaneously but individually. According to the Statute of the International Court of Justice, which is the primary judicial part of the United Nations.
