Germany Plans Major Military Buildup by 2029
(MENAFN) Germany’s armed forces are set to considerably expand their arsenal by 2029, the year when the current administration foresees a potential risk stemming from Russia.
This plan is outlined in an official directive from the nation’s defense chief, as reported by a news agency.
The directive, named ‘Directive Priorities for the Bolstering of Readiness,’ was signed on May 19 by Carsten Breuer, the chief inspector of the Bundeswehr, according to the news agency’s Sunday report.
Despite these concerns, Moscow has rejected accusations of aggressive intentions towards NATO member states, labeling Western fears of an impending attack as alarmist tactics designed to rationalize increased military buildup among European NATO members.
Breuer’s directive stresses the acquisition of state-of-the-art air defense technology and long-range precision strike systems capable of targeting beyond 500 kilometers.
Additionally, the order calls for the expansion of ammunition reserves across various categories and the advancement of capabilities in electronic warfare and space-based systems for both protective and offensive operations.
On Monday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz revealed that the government has removed limitations on the types of weaponry it can provide to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
This announcement is widely interpreted as a signal that long-range Taurus missiles, previously withheld by the former administration, might soon be supplied.
