Spain Urges Immediate Gaza War Halt And Progress On Two-State Solution
Spain's Foreign Minister Manuel Albares called for an immediate halt to the“massacre” in Gaza and an end to the ongoing conflict during a high-level Madrid summit.
The summit, held on Sunday, May 25, brought together representatives from over 20 European and Arab countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Morocco, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The gathering aimed to pressure Israel into stopping its military operations in Gaza.
According to France 24, Albares emphasized before the meeting that their goal was to end Israel's“inhumane war” in Gaza, lift the blockade on humanitarian aid, and move decisively toward a two-state solution.
Albares highlighted the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, called for an arms embargo on Israel, and pledged Spain's continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) alongside increased humanitarian aid for Gaza.
He also stressed the need to sanction Jewish settlers responsible for violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, describing the war in Gaza as an“open wound for humanity” that continues to claim victims daily. Albares warned that silence equates to complicity in the ongoing massacre.
Spain, which officially recognized Palestine as an independent state in 2024, remains a strong advocate for the two-state solution. The summit took place as Israel denied accusations of genocide, framing its military campaign as a response to Hamas attacks.
The Madrid summit reflects growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and underscores the urgent call for a peaceful resolution. The gathering highlighted the collective responsibility of the global community to protect civilians and uphold human rights amid escalating violence.
