UN Welcomes Sudan's New Premier
(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged the naming of Kamil Eltayeb Idris as Sudan’s new prime minister, according to a statement from his spokesperson on Tuesday.
This move follows the decision by Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who officially appointed Idris a day earlier.
In his statement, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that Guterres "hopes the appointment will serve as the first step towards inclusive consultations aimed at forming a broad-based technocratic government and forging peace."
The UN chief emphasized the need for collaborative dialogue to bring about a more unified administration that can steer the country toward stability.
Dujarric also noted that Guterres highlights the importance of national consensus, stressing that such efforts should result in "tangible progress" to support the welfare of all Sudanese citizens.
He outlined critical goals, including "silencing the guns, delivering essential services to all the population and laying the groundwork for a common vision for Sudan’s future."
Kamil Idris, previously a UN representative and former presidential hopeful, takes on the role of prime minister at a time of significant turmoil.
This marks Sudan’s first official prime minister since Abdalla Hamdok stepped down in January 2022, following a prolonged political stalemate that ultimately escalated into a civil conflict.
Just last month, General Burhan appointed veteran diplomat Dafallah al-Haj as acting prime minister, signaling ongoing shifts in Sudan’s political leadership.
Since April 2023, a violent power struggle has been unfolding between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group.
The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and triggered a dire humanitarian catastrophe, placing Sudan among the world's most urgent crisis zones.
