(MENAFN) Authorities reported a tragic incident Sunday night in northwest Ohio where a train collided with multiple pedestrians. The event occurred at 7:30 p.m. (2330 GMT) on the Miles Newton Bridge, which spans the Sandusky River in Fremont.

Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton confirmed that two women perished in the accident. Of the two children involved, one was rescued and transported to a medical facility, while the other, a 5-year-old, remains missing.

Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez stated that emergency personnel are currently searching the Sandusky River for the missing child.

The mayor noted that the location where the pedestrians were struck is not typically used for crossing. However, further details regarding the specific circumstances of the incident were not immediately available.

Sheriff Hilton indicated that at least five pedestrians were involved in the tragic event.

Fremont police have closed the bridge and are advising the public to avoid the area. Law enforcement officials are currently on site.
