Salman Rushdie Attacker Receives 25-Year Prison Term

(MENAFN) A U.S. jury has imposed a 25-year prison sentence on Hadi Matar, the individual who stabbed author Salman Rushdie during a public talk in New York in 2022, as per reports from U.S. news outlets.

This followed his conviction on charges of attempted homicide and physical assault.

Matar, who holds dual nationality (U.S. and Lebanese), was declared guilty in February 2025 after an eight-day legal proceeding.

A jury in New York issued the harshest punishment for second-degree attempted murder, to be served at the same time as a seven-year prison term for attacking another individual present on the stage, according to the media.

Rushdie, who was repeatedly stabbed — over twelve times — as he was getting ready to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institution, sustained critical wounds, which resulted in permanent blindness in one eye and serious damage to his liver, intestines, and other organs.

Matar is also facing separate federal-level accusations of terrorism tied to the incident.
