Russia-Ukraine conflict gets marked by continued fighting

(MENAFN) This past week in the Russia-Ukraine conflict was marked by continued fighting along multiple front-line areas and fresh Russian gains in the Donbass region. Despite active hostilities, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary 30-hour ceasefire starting Saturday evening to observe Orthodox Easter, calling on Ukraine to honor the pause as well.

Putin emphasized that Ukraine’s response to the ceasefire would signal whether it was genuinely open to peace talks. While urging Russian troops to stay alert for possible violations, he referenced past instances of broken agreements by Kiev.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky initially criticized the ceasefire offer, accusing Moscow of manipulating human suffering. However, he later softened his stance, suggesting Ukraine would consider extending the truce if Russia also upheld it. “Silence for silence, strikes for strikes,” he said.

Despite the pause, both sides reported multiple violations. Russian officials accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out over 1,300 attacks during the truce, while Zelensky claimed that Russia launched around 900 strikes and 46 assault operations.

The ceasefire concluded as originally planned, with the Kremlin announcing several hours before the end that there would be no extension.
