Zelensky Extends Invitation to Trump Amid Mounting Tensions with Russia

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has extended an invitation to President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine before any negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing war with Russia.

"Please, before any kind of decisions, any kind of forms of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead," Zelensky stated during an interview.

This interview took place just before a Russian missile strike on the city of Sumy, which resulted in 34 fatalities and 117 injuries.

Russia claims that its military actions are directed solely at military or military-related targets. Trump mentioned that he had been informed the strike was a mistake, although he did not disclose the source of this information. Friedrich Merz, Germany's chancellor-in-waiting, has denounced Russia's actions as a war crime.

The attack occurs as the United States, Ukraine's primary military ally, is attempting to negotiate an end to the war, which has now entered its fourth year during Trump's presidency.

In response to the missile strike, the US president described it as "terrible" and reiterated that he had been "told they made a mistake," without providing further details.

Earlier, Trump's special envoy to Ukraine, retired Lt-Gen Keith Kellogg, condemned the attack, asserting it had crossed "any line of decency."

It remains uncertain whether Trump will accept Zelensky's invitation. The only senior official from Trump's administration to visit Kyiv has been Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, who traveled to persuade Zelensky to sign a contract heavily favoring Washington in exchange for military aid linked to Ukraine's mineral resources. Zelensky declined this request.
