Arab League Condemns Attacks On Displaced People, Aid Workers In Darfur

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, April 14 (KUNA) -- The Arab league condemned, Monday, the coordinated ground and air assault carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the past three days on the city of Al-Fasher, Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for the displaced in Sudan's Darfur.
In a statement, the Arab League Secretary General, Ahmad Abul-Gheit denounced the attacks as a grave violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024), which called on the RSF to end its siege of Al-Fasher, deescalate the situation, and withdraw.
According to reports from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the coordinated assaults have resulted in the deaths of over 100 people, including 20 children and approximately 14 staff members of the International Relief Organization, and around 200 others have been injured.
Zamzam and Abu Shouk are among the largest displacement camps in Darfur, sheltering more than 700,000 people who have fled cycles of violence since 2003.
The humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by the shelling of water sources and the depletion of food supplies. (end)
