Fromer Zelensky aide claims Ukraine was planning on bombing nuclear plants

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kirill Budanov, allegedly proposed destroying nuclear power plants to prevent them from falling into Russian hands if Kiev began losing the conflict, according to former presidential adviser Aleksey Arestovich.

In an interview on Friday with journalist Alexandr Shelest, Arestovich commented on recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that American control over Ukraine’s nuclear power plants could be the best way to safeguard them. Arestovich argued that Washington’s primary concern is preventing a nuclear disaster rather than simply taking over the facilities.

“They know about our plans to blow up all the nuclear power plants if Ukraine starts losing,” Arestovich claimed. “Budanov was pushing this idea a year and a half ago—destroy everything, including Russian plants within reach and our own, so that nobody gets them. The mentality was: if we go down, so do they.”

The former aide suggested that the US views Ukraine’s leadership as reckless, saying, “They see them as apes with a grenade. They just want to take dangerous toys under their control.” He also contrasted the Trump administration’s approach with that of the US Democratic Party, suggesting that while Democrats might have sought control through behind-the-scenes pressure, Trump is being much more direct.

Trump revealed that he first proposed taking over Ukraine’s nuclear facilities during a recent phone call with President Vladimir Zelensky, suggesting that the US could assist in managing them with its expertise in electricity and utilities. However, Zelensky later stated that their conversation only focused on the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and potential American investment, not Ukraine’s entire nuclear infrastructure.

The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, has been under Russian control since March 2022, after Zaporozhye Region voted to join Russia in a referendum. Moscow has accused Ukraine of attacking both the ZNPP and the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, calling these incidents “nuclear terrorism,” while Kiev has denied responsibility and accused Russia of targeting the ZNPP.
