NEPCO Chief: Jordan-Iraq Electricity Interconnection Phase II To Conclude By July 2025
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, March 26 (Petra) – Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) Sufyan Batayneh announced that the second phase of the Jordan-Iraq electricity interconnection project is on track for completion by the end of July 2025.
In a statement on Wednesday, Batayneh detailed that NEPCO has finalized 95 percent of the project's civil works, with ongoing efforts to install electrical equipment and conduct essential testing.
Jordan commenced electricity supply to Iraq through the national grid in March 2024 as part of the project's first phase, with an initial capacity of 40 megawatts reaching the Rutba region. The second phase will extend the interconnection to al-Qaim, Iraq.
Batayneh highlighted that in February 2024, Jordan and Iraq signed an amendment to the electricity sales agreement, ensuring the delivery of 132-kilovolt electricity to meet Rutba's energy demand of 40 megawatts.
Upon completion of the second phase, Iraq's total electricity supply from Jordan will increase to approximately 150 megawatts. Future expansions in the interconnection project could elevate supply capacity to 500 megawatts.
The foundation stone for the Jordan-Iraq electricity interconnection project was laid on October 6, 2022, under the patronage of former Prime Minister Bishr Khasawneh and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
