Brazil’s Supreme Court Holds First Hearing Regarding Former President

(MENAFN) Brazil’s Supreme Court held its initial hearing on Tuesday to determine if previous Leader Jair Bolsonaro and some of his associates should face trial for allegedly attempting to orchestrate a coup after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

If the court accepts the case, Bolsonaro along with seven other individuals would be in trial for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government of Leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The court’s first chamber examined accusations brought forth by the Prosecutor’s Office against what is referred to as the “crucial nucleus” of the conspiracy.

This “nucleus” includes Bolsonaro and seven other individuals from a total of 33 current suspects. Among the accused are Walter Braga Netto, a former army general who served as Bolsonaro's defense minister, and Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s personal aide.

All of the accused are charged with establishing an armed criminal group, attempting dismantle democratic governance by violence, plotting a coup d'état, inflicting harm through violence, as well as posing a significant threat to public property.

The formal complaint, which was filed in February of this year, accuses Bolsonaro and his associates of leading a plan to overturn the outcomes of the 2022 presidential election, which Lula had won.
